You Don’t Suck at Money…Time to Stop Pursuing Perfection

You Don't Suck At Money

Estimated Reading Time: 4 minutes

I will be the first to tell you nothing is perfect. We scroll through social media and see everyone else “living their best life” and we start to imagine if WE could live our best life. Then, here come the negative thoughts:

  • Why can’t I get my finances together?
  • Why am I so bad with my money?
  • I’m never going to have enough money to (fill in the blank).

It’s time to stop these thoughts because YOU DON’T SUCK AT MONEY! Everything must be taught and learned. You were not born knowing how to talk, it was a skill that you learned. So, how do you expect yourself to automatically know how to manage your finances without the proper teaching?

You Don't Suck at Money-Stop Pursuing Perfection

Spoiler Alert: You can’t. Learning about money and finances takes time and it is not something that will happen overnight. You must keep learning to get it right…not perfect…but right.

I have been working on my finances for over 15 years and it is not perfect. I am better than I was 15 years ago. Heck! I am better than I was last month! It all starts with learning your own spending habits aka a budget.

“I have tried to follow a budget a million times!”

I get it. You might feel like you suck at money if you go over budget for the 5th month in a row. Believe it or not, your budget isn’t broken, it’s just out of balance.

A budget is a live document that is always changing. If you don’t change your budget to fit your needs, then it will always “fail”. A “failed” budget just means that you need to make more adjustments. Notice how I keep putting the word “failed” in quotes? Failure is just a perception. It doesn’t mean you “failed”, it just means you have found a bunch of ways that didn’t work and you have to try again…and again…and again…

“I did EVERYTHING the experts said and it’s still not working…”

First of all, I am SO HAPPY that you are reaching out and trying to learn more about money! That is the first step to financial success.

Secondly, not ALL financial advice is going to work for YOU. Everyone is different, and every money situation is different. You need to be following a plan that is specific to your needs. That is why I recommend you talk to a financial professional (a coach like myself, financial advisor, or accountant), to know what YOU REALLY NEED.

I am not saying don’t read personal finance books or blogs, or listen to podcasts, or watch awesome money YouTube channels. I am saying that knowledge is power but first you need to be knowledgeable with your own situation and expand your knowledge from there.

“So, if I don’t suck at money, what does that have to do with perfection?”

When you feel like you suck at money, you give the illusion that you have failed. Failure is feeling a lack of perfection. In order to stop the fear of failure, you must accept that nothing is perfect. To do that you must start with baby steps.

Celebrate the little victories that you do every day and weekly. Your first step could be to check your bank account every day. Regardless of the balance, celebrate that you have taken a step in the right direction. You can get up, dance, shout, sing, or whatever comes to mind as long you have a positive reaction.

Soon you will realize that you don’t suck at money and you will feel a lot better and accept where you are in your journey. So, stop scrolling through Facebook feeling envious of your friends and family and start being happy with the changes you are making in your life because, trust me, the changes you are making are HUGE!

    This part is SO important:

” So, stop scrolling through Facebook feeling envious of your friends and family and start being happy with the changes you are making in your life because, trust me, the changes you are making are HUGE!”

There are plenty of studies showing that social media addiction is very real and it is creating all sorts of problems these days. It’s important to remember that people are generally sharing their “highlight reels” on social media and it’s not a true reflection of their real lives.

  2. I love this article, Nicole! Thanks for being transparent. Even though I spend countless hours studying personal finance, I still make mistakes from time to time. The important thing is to realize failure is not permanent. Like you wrote in your post, keep trying! And when that does not work, try again!
